The day started out with heavy rain, so we decided to stay in port. We put on raincoats & headed to the supermarket to reprovision. We mainly needed coke for our rum. At 11:30 the rain stopped, the sky cleared & the sun came out, so we decided to head to Oswego.
We went through 5 locks today, numbers 3,5,6,7,8. There is no lock #4. They started building the canal from each end, and when they got to the middle decided there was no need for lock #4, but didn't want to renumber the other locks.
At lock #6, for the first time, we had trouble inside of a lock. The wind had really picked up, and was very gusty. A gust of wind came, and instead of pinning us against the lock wall, it bounced off the wall and pushed our bow away from the wall very forcefully. I was on the bow holding the rope, and had to hold on with all my might to prevent the boat from turning sideways in the lock and smashing into the wall on the other side. We really were very close to being completely out of control. I was still shaking from the experience after we left the lock. That was not fun!
We pulled into Oswego Marina for the night.
We plan to cross Lake Ontario tomorrow.
Red sky at night, sailor's delight
