4th of July

Rome, NY

Happy 4th of July. We planned to leave early today, but woke up to rain. We were glad to see it clear up by 9am. It's much cooler today & very windy. Saw an eagle fly over the canal & also saw a deer. Went through 3 locks today, numbers 18-20. We had planned to stop in Utica today. We pulled in  there, but didn't get a good feeling. The electric didn't work & when you walk around you're in a restaurant parking lot. We decided to keep going & went to Bellamy Harbor Park in Rome, NY. It's a free dock in a park setting, with restaurants & shops close by. It's fitting that we ended up in Rome today. Construction of the Erie Canal started in Rome on July 4, 1817.
We visited Fort Stanwix. The British built the original fort during the French & Indian War to protect the portage between the Mohawk River & Wood Creek that leads to Lake Ontario & French Canada.
West of Rome, the Erie Canal crosses its summit. The high point separates the Mohawk River Basin that flows east, from the Wood Creek Basin that flows west. At lock 21 we will start going down.
We plan to head to Sylvan Beach tomorrow.
