Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin

8/18/14
WE HATE LAKE MICHIGAN!
All the forecasts that we checked showed that Monday would be a perfect day to cross the lake and head to Wisconsin. Not one forecast was right! The winds were much higher and out of the south, not the east like we expected. The waves were much bigger than forecasted so once again we were rolling side to side the whole trip. The severe thunderstorm that was forecasted for Monday night into Tuesday arrived at 12 in the afternoon. The only time it was calm was when we were in a fog bank. We couldn't see anything, but at least there were no wind or waves. Unfortunately it only lasted about a half hour. After we left the fog, the waves got even bigger.

We were so happy to make it into the Sturgeon Bay Canal. We went to the municipal marina at Stone Harbor Resort. This place is great. It looks brand new with a restaurant & bar on site, plus we get to use the indoor pool, hot tub & sauna in the resort.

The forecast was terrible for today so we stayed in port. The forecast was wrong again. It was supposed to rain all day and the wind was to blow at 20-25mph. It didn't rain, there's a light gentle breeze, the sun came out in the afternoon, and it's really warm. I think we need to start traveling on the days of forecasted bad weather, and stay in port on the forecasted good days.

Al took the day in port to tackle a boat project. There was a problem with the bilge pump in the shower sump. Water was overflowing the sump & running into the bilge. Al took the sump all apart to check it out. He found that the float switch was bad. We checked the map, and West Marine was only 2 miles away, but of course, whenever we venture out by bike, it was all uphill. Ugh! West Marine had the parts he needed. Now everything is back together and working great.

After that job was complete, we headed to the pool. We felt recharged after enjoying the pool & hot tub.

Tomorrow we plan to head south. No sense in looking at the forecast.

Palmer Johnson is building this yacht. We hear it's for a Russian millionairess. Looks like it should be in a James Bond movie.

We needed this low bridge to open to get to the marina

Weed eater. This machine cuts the weeds in the channel & marina. Without it cutting the weeds on a daily basis, the channel & marina would be unnavigable.
